亦香亦臭

出现频率最高的“气味”非smell莫属。香味、臭叶、中性气味都可以和semll来形容。cooking smell 表示“烹饪时散发的气味”。通常在前面不加修饰语的情况下，smell 指的是不好的气味。The semll made her open the window.难闻的气味使她打开了窗户。

它还能够作为动词使用，意思是“有……气味”“闻上去……”：Rose smell sweet .玫瑰闻上去很香。smell out 则表示“察觉出”“闻出”：The dog will smell out a thief.狗会靠嗅觉察觉到贼。

odor（英国英语里拼做odour）和smell的意思很接近，有时都可以互换使用。但odor明显要比smell正式，经常用在科技文献中，例如the odor of ethanol（乙醇的气味）；The unspeakable odor filled the room.一股难以形容的气味充满了房间。汉语中常说“气味相投”，英语里也有in good odor with sb.（得宠于某人）的说法：The guard is in good odor with the queen.警卫告很受皇后的宠爱。

咖啡、啤酒等东西的“香味”通常称做aroma。例如：the aroma of hot coffee 热咖啡的香味。aroma还可以引申为“口味”“韵味”，各嗅觉的味道没什么关系：an aroma of the arient有种东方的风味。

有部电影《女人香》，英文叫Scent of a Woman。scent除了可以表示人的“香”，还可以表示“花香”，英语叫做the scent of flowers.一般来说，scent的浓度比smell 要谈一些，通常要有不错的嗅觉才能闻到，因此它又可以引申为“线索”：The glove gave the police a false scent.这只手套给了警方一条假线索。最后来个“臭”的——stink（恶臭）。The stink of feet指“臭脚的味道”。stink当动词的时候表示“发出臭气”：The bad fish stinks.这条坏掉的鱼发出难闻的臭味。stink的形容词形式stinky（恶臭的）如果你学英语学得头脑发昏，请到外面闻闻the fragrance of the air（空气的芬芳），不要在屋里闷着享受你的stinky feet了.
