answer the door开门
door的基本意思是“门”，这谁都知道。He opened the door．他把门打开了。两人在家，听见有人敲I'q(knock at the door)，离门近的一位会说：I'll get it．／I'll get the door．意思是：我去开门!answer the door也表示“开门”。

从door一词延伸出来的意义也不少。I will wait for you at the door．我在门口等你。这句话并不是说我靠在门上等你，door一词指的是门口的那一片区域。很多建筑中(如写字楼、宾馆)每扇门代表一个“房间”。They live four doors down the hall．他们住大厅过去的第四间。a door to success表示“成功之门”。这个门可是虚幻的，不是木头的，也不是铁的。办事耍不正当手段，中国人说“走后门”，英语里则称为go by the back door。

门上的零件也都有各自的说法：“门把手”叫做door handle或doorknob；“门铃”叫做door-bell；doorframe是门的框架——门框。

另一个常见的“门”叫做gate，通常比door大得多。The schoolyard has four gates．这个校园有四个大门。说某人“生财有道”，可以说：He has found the gate to riches．老板炒员工的鱿鱼，要将他们从大门轰出去，因此give sb．The gate表示“把某人解雇”，而且不是很礼貌。导致尼克松总统下台的著名的“水门事件”，英语中叫做Watergate。Watergate本是一个地名，但其中的gate被人们断章取义地拿出来，加上其他类似事件构成新词，如spygate(间谍门)等等。这也体现了英语词汇的发展。

最后提醒一句：当你送别人出门的时候，一定要用1 will show you to the door．而非I will show you the door．因为前者表示“送某人到门口”，而后者则是“下逐客令”(告诉你，大门在那边)!
