机会主义

“机会”“可能性”自然是chance最常见的意思：There is a chance that 1 will see her in a few days．过几天我有可能见到她。It’s a chance in a lifetime．You should not miss it．这是一生中难得的机会，你不应错过。by chance的意思是“偶然”。例如：Yesterday I met him on the street by chance．我昨天偶然在大街上遇到了他。

人的一生中会碰到不同的机会，因此关于chance的说法也非常多。猫狗的体型都不大，因此a dog(cat)’s chance表示“机会极其微小”；而a smart chance表示“可能性很大”。give sb．a chance表示“给某人一次机会”：Give me a chance and I will show you that I can make it．给我一次机会，我会让你看到我能够做到。

谈到“可能性”，必须承认“不可能性”，因此chance本身包含着“冒险”的意思，通过短语take the chance来表现。 We had to take the chance or we would definitely lose the game．我们不得不冒这个险，否则我们肯定会输掉比赛的。

chance作为动词则表示“碰运气”“尝试”：Let him chance it．让他试试吧。也可以表示“碰巧”：one of my friends chanced to be there when I arrived．我赶到时，我的一位朋友碰巧也在那里。

再来一个表示“机会”的词，那就是opportunity，它比。chance更为正式，通常用来描述“大事”。The new job I have been offered is a good oppor - tunity for me．我刚找到的新工作对我来说是一个很好的机会。请注意take the opportunity 可没有“冒险”的意思，而是表示“借此机会”:Let me take this opportunity to congratulate you.我趁此机会对你们表示祝贺吧!

目前提倡农村人和城市人“就业机会均等”，这在英语里面叫做equal employment opportu-nitv。你的疏忽就是小偷的机会，故谚语云:Opportunity makes the thief．疏忽招盗贼。同时,我们学英语的时候也不要犯机会主义(opportunism)的错误——其实，这两个词都来自形容词opportune，它表示“时间合尊的”，例如：Her arrival was very opportune。她来得非常及时。
