脚下大地

如果想表达“地球”，要用the earth(老师肯定比我讲得好多了)；Before Columbus most people believed that the earth was flat．在哥伦布之前，大多数人都相信地球是平的。earth的另一个意思是“土壤”——大地的重要组成部分。She put the seeds in the earth and waited them to come out．她把种子放人土壤里，等着它们发芽。

earth可以用来做动词，但频率并不高。它可以表示“钻进地洞”(就像土行孙)，如：The hedgehog earthed．刺猬在打洞。另外还可以表示“给植物培土”，如：Mother earthed up the rose．妈妈给玫瑰培土。

除了表示“地球”以外，earth的大多数使用场合还是在各种惯用短语中。最常见的是on earth，表示“到底”“究竟”，用来加重语气：Where on earth can he be?他到底会去哪儿呢?No one on earth can hold back the progress of the society．没有人能够阻止社会的进步。

back／down to earth是另一个earth的“藏身之处”。它的意思是“从幻想中清醒过来，回到现实”：The reult of the exam brought him back to earth．考试的结果让他从幻想回到现实中来(原来以为能得100分，结果得了59．5)。run sth．／sb．to earth则表示“挖地三尺寻找某物或某人”。The king ordered the police to run the gardener to earth．国王命令警察，就是挖地三尺也得把花匠找到。

下面来看看earth构成的其他单词。earth后面加上“虫子”worm，就成了著名益虫蚯蚓(earthworm)；加上en可以变成形容词earth-en(陶制的)，而陶器的英文是earthenware或pottery。从陶器的两种不同说法来看，一个表明了它的原料——earth(泥土)；另一个则表示它的用途——pot(瓶瓶罐罐)的总称。
