另一个更常用的“胸”叫做breast。“袒胸露怀”，英语中叫做bare one’s breast，其中bare是动词，表示“露出”。breast用来形容心情的场合也不少：Joy filled his breast when he knew that the baby was a boy．他在得知新生儿是个男孩后满心欢喜。a troubled breast则表示“心烦意乱”。

breast的另一个重要的意思是人的“乳房”，女性杀手之一“乳腺癌”的英文叫做breast cancer。“吃奶的孩子”叫做babies at the breast；“断奶的孩子”叫做babies past the breast o She gives the breast to her baby．她给婴儿喂奶。由于隆胸手术(plastic surgery)的盛行，越来越多的母亲舍弃了“母乳喂养”(breast-feeding)的哺育方式，改为用奶粉喂养，这对下一代是非常不利的。

breast在赛跑中可以做动词，表示“用胸部撞线”，当然只有第一名才能这样做。The run-her breasted the tape．选手用胸部撞线。另外，它还可以表示用身体正对着前方“挺进，奋勇前进”：The oil tanker breasted the waves．油轮破浪前进。

breast的衍生词abreast和“胸”的关系不大，表示“并肩地”。例如：The soldiers march abreast．士兵们并肩前进。“跟上时代”这句流行语，英语里叫做to keep abreast of the times。我们学英语也不能仅停留在枯燥死板的课本上，也得跟上时代。口语中经常用bust来表示“胸部”。人体重要指标“三围”中的“胸围”，有时就用bust来表示。形容词busty和chesty意思相近，意思是“胸部丰满的”。汉语中常说的人的“心胸”，和英语中的各种表示“胸”的单词关系不大，通常用mind来表示。“心胸开阔”“心胸狭窄”分别是open-minded和narrow-minded。
