大船小舟

和人民群众生活密切相关的船当属boat(小船，小舟)。by boat的意思是“乘船”。We can access the island by boat．我们可以乘船去这个小岛。常见的boat种类有：fishing boat(渔船)；sailing boat(帆船)；rowing boat(游艇),等等。boat作为动词来讲是一种运动“划船”，相当于row a boat：They were fond of boating．他们喜欢划船。

有些boat专门用做渡船(ferry)，有比较固定的运行时间，没赶上的话会很耽误事情，因此miss the boat可以引申为“坐失良机”。Peter missed the boat when he decided not to buy the house．彼得决定不买那套房子，其实他正是在坐失良机。老板要给员工降薪水，员工必须抛开平时自己之间的矛盾，联合起来与之谈判。这在汉语中叫“同舟共济”，英语中相应的说法是in the same boat(言外之意是，必须联合起来采取行动)。We are in the same boat and must unite to have a formal talk with the boss．我们应该同舟共济，联合起来和老板进行正式谈判。

大一点儿的船叫做ship，这种船通常在大河或海洋上航行。His ship is in danger of sink-ing on the sea．他的船有在海上沉没的危险。

几个世纪以前，很多有钱人拥有自己的远洋船队，到海外淘金(他们自己可不去啊，怕喂鲨鱼)。如果船只没有出事的话，这种投资是稳赚不赔的；但这种投资周期很长，短的要半年，长的要一两年。当船只回归的时候，船主肯定发财了。因此when one’s ship comes home被引申为“当某人有钱时”：When my ship comes home，i will buy a villa in the sub-urbs．等我有钱了，我要在郊区买所别墅。

“船只”的统称叫做vessel。There were many vessels in the harbor today．今天港口有许多船只。vessel还有“容器”“器皿”的意思：A jar is vessel for holding water．罐子是盛水的器皿。
