托马斯?哈代的著名小说《远离尘嚣》的英文是Far From the Madding Crowd。这里的crowd是“人群”的意思，中国的crowd恐怕是世界最多的了。

crowd最基本的意思是“群”：The president greeted the crowd with a smile．总统用笑容向群众致意。(crowd人群)Ants migrate in crowds．蚂蚁成群迁徙。(crowd蚁群)The ta-ble is covered with a crowd of books．桌子上堆满了一大堆书。(crowd书群)
go with／follow the crowd 从众，随大流
may pass in a corwd 还得混得过去，马马虎虎
我们中的很多人有“从众”的心理，这在英语中用follow(go with)the crowd来表示。She likes to follow the crowd．她喜欢随大流。你的英语成绩总是七八十分，比上不足，比下有余，你就可以说：I may pass in a crowd in Eng-lish study．我在英语方面还马马虎虎。(may pass in a crowd表示“还能混得过去”)
crowd into 一拥而入
crowd sb. For mon-ey 向某人逼债
crowd还可以做动词用，而且它的主语通常不止一个人。crowd后面直接跟“地点”时指“把某个地方挤满”：Audiences crowded the stadi-um．观众们把体育场挤得满满的。crowd into的意思是“一拥而人”：People crowded into the bank to buy treasury bond．人们涌人银行抢购国债。crowd还可以表示“逼债”：Mr．Huang crowded Mr．Yang for the money he owed．黄世仁逼着杨白劳归还欠下的债。
overcrowded 过于拥挤的
后面加上-ed变成的形容词crowded意思是“拥挤的”。如crowded street(拥挤的街道)。overcrowded表示“过于拥挤的”，现在一些世界组织已经开始注意到城市的拥挤问题，并把一些城市列为overcrowded cities。
be thronged with挤满了人
比crowd更为正式的“人群”和“挤”是throng，用法和crowd基本相同：The supermar-ket was thronged with people．超市里挤满了人。a throng of questions(一大堆问题)。
